Will Marijuana Soon Be Legal in New Jersey? Hearings Set for This Week
- posted: Nov. 27, 2018
The proposed bill, entitled “New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory and Expungement Aid Modernization Act,” would legalize the possession and personal use of one ounce or less of marijuana for people at least 21 years old and create a commercial marijuana industry in our state. This, of course, entails taxation and regulation.
It also would provide for an “expedited expungement” process for those who have prior arrests and convictions for possession or distribution of up to one ounce of marijuana. If the proposed law is enacted, the Administrative Office of the Courts must create an electronic filing system for expedited expungements.
After the hearings set for this week, the next step would be a vote by the Senate and Assembly in December. If the two sides can’t agree, legislators could pass the bill and send it to Governor Phil Murphy, who could then rewrite portions of it under a conditional veto.
